International protection of mark may be sought under the provisions of the Madrid Agreement and the Protocol in the Contracting States to the Madrid system (about 120 parties) by filing a single international application for trademark registration before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The international registration of the mark has the same effect for any of the designated countries as if the mark has been filed directly with the National Trademark Office of the said country. Therefore, the international registration is the equivalent to multiple national trademark registrations. The applicant must have an application for registration filed with the national office (basic application) or he must have already obtained registration of his mark in the country of origin. The basic application or registration may also be an application or a registered mark of the European Union. International application is filed with the national or regional office of the country of origin.
